Analysis of Piled Rafts

by the program ELPLA

Today, nearly every engineering office has its own computer programs for the analysis and design of piled rafts. Furthermore, most of the available programs under Windows are user-friendly and give very excellent output graphics with colors. Consequently, theoretically a secretary not an engineer can use them. But the problem here is how can man control the data and check the results.

The purpose of this book is to present methods, equations, procedures and techniques used in the formulation of the computer analysis of piled rafts. These items are coded in the program ELPLA.

This book contains many practical problems which are analyzed in details by using the program ELPLA. It is important for the engineer to be familiar with this information when carrying out computer analysis of piled rafts. An understanding of these concepts will be of great benefit in carrying out the computer analysis, resolving difficulties and judging the acceptability of the results. Three familiar types of subsoil models (standard models) for piled raft analyses are considered. The models are Simple Assumption Model, Winkler’s Model and Continuum Model. In the analysis, rafts are treated as elastic or rigid. In this book the Finite Element-Method was used to analyze the raft, in which plate bending elements represent the raft according to the two-dimensional nature of foundation. The development of the finite element equations for plate elements is well documented in standard textbooks such as Schwarz (1984) and Zienkiewicz/ Cheung (1970). Therefore, it is not duplicated in this book.

Analysis of Piled Rafts

Theory for the calculation of bearing capacity of piles by ELPLA

and Pile Wall

by the Program Quick ELPLA

Various problems in geotechnical Engineering can be investigated by the program Quick ELPLA. The original version of the program Quick ELPLA in the ELPLA package was developed to calculate the settlement and bearing capacity of single pile and pile wall according to DIN 4014 (edition 03/1990) and to draw the results in diagrams according to the German Code. Further development the program to meet the needs of practice. The development includes the interpolation between the values of Tables 1, 2, 4 and 5 of the German standard DIN 4014. User friendly interface for defining data or present results is also developed. Furthermore, many changes were carried out to the graphical output.

Consolidation Settlement

by the

 Program Quick ELPLA

This book describes the essential equations to obtain the nonlinear stress distribution in the soil. Consequently, the consolidation settlement of different shapes of loadings on consolidated clay deposits can be estimated. The solution depends on closed-form equations for determining the stress and consolidation settlement in the soil.

Stresses in Soil

by the Program Quick ELPLA

This book describes the essential equations used in Quick ELPLA to obtain stresses in soil with some verification examples. The problems of stresses in soil outlined in this book can be also analyzed by the program ELPLA and the same results can be obtained. Quick ELPLA is a simple user interface program and needs little information to define a problem. It is prefer to use it for a simple foundation geometry. Furthermore, ELPLA can also read data files of a problem of stress in soil defined by Quick ELPLA. User can analyze the problem again by ELPLA.

Although the numerical procedure outlined here is valid for loaded areas of any arbitrary shape, but only the two special cases of loaded areas; rectangular and circular, in addition to the point load are taken into consideration.

This book describes procedures and methods available in Quick ELPLA to analyze the problem of time-dependent consolidation of clay. The methods consider various analysis aspects of the consolidation problem such as, among others: uniform and time-dependent loading, cycling loading, nonlinear compressibility parameters, multi-layered soil, normal- and over-consolidated clay. The initial applied stress on the clay layers may be considered non-uniform.
